Cork Institute of Technology, which incorporates the CIT Crawford College of Art and Design, CIT Cork School of Music, and the National Maritime College of Ireland, invites applications from suitably qualified persons for a fully funded PhD position at the Nimbus Centre.

The Nimbus Centre is involved in an extensive range of research and innovation projects ranging from the embedded computing systems space to cloud computing applications and services. Nimbus researchers and engineers work extensively with partners in industry and academia from across the globe. The Centre is now looking for an exceptional researcher interested in studying for a PhD in Computing or Electronic Engineering with an interest in studying problems of QoS/QoE based networking and management for the Internet of Things. This position is part of the Nimbus Centre’s involvement in the Science Foundation Ireland funded CONNECT Centre for Future Communications and Networks and offers an extensive opportunity to collaborate with other researchers across the CONNECT Centre.

The successful applicant will be supervised by Dr. Dirk Pesch, Head of Centre, Nimbus Centre for Embedded Systems Research and will be working as part of a team of researchers, who are developing novel networking and management concepts for low power wireless networks and the Internet of Things.

The successful applicant will have

  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Computing, Electronic or Computer Engineering. Exceptional candidates holding only an honours Bachelor degree will also be considered,
  • Strong interest in low power wireless communication protocols and networks for the Internet of Things,
  • Extensive knowledge of communication protocols, particularly ISM band low power wireless protocols (LoRA, IEEE802.15.4, Zigbee, etc.) and resource management for embedded networked systems
  • Experience with computer simulation concepts and tools,
  • Practical programming experience in C/C++, Java, and/or Python
  • Practical experience in implementing communication protocols and applications on embedded low power micro-controller based embedded platforms using OSs such as TinyOS, Contiki, RIOT, etc.
  • Knowledge of network management platforms for IoT and wireless/mobile service management techniques distinct advantage,
  • Proven ability to work well both in a team environment and on his/her own initiative to solve technical problems,
  • Fluent spoken and written English,
  • Practical, assertive and achievement orientated. Good self-management, report writing and communication skills for interaction with project partners are essential.

Scholarship: €16,000 to €18,000 tax free per annum based on experience plus tuition fees for PhD study of up to €5,500 per annum (fully covers fees for EU nationals)
