We invite applications for a 1+3 or +3 studentship, full time or part time, with the opportunity for co-supervision between institutions.

We encourage you to contact your prospective supervisor well in advance of submission:

Swansea University: Dr Matt Roach ([email protected])

We are specifically interested in digital social research projects that focus on research questions relating to problems of health and social care, constrained communities, business and innovation, cyber security, crime and safety and what insights may be drawn from analysis of big social data. Big social media data is the product of economic and social behaviour that should increasingly be understood as occurring in digital space – the digital economy and society. We have seen the exponential growth of online spaces that generate both implicit (through clicks, transactions, downloads etc.) and explicit (through social media posts, reviews, recommendations and the like) signals of citizens’ needs, desires, motivations, opinions and sentiments. So, the frequency of health term search query can help inform future social care interventions and planning; and, the posts by social network users can provide glimpses into society-level concerns that both unite and divide.

The successful candidate will normally be expected to commence their PhD on 1 October 2017.
