PhD Studentship: JWS2017/23: Bio-inspired Additive Manufacturing for 3D printed multimaterial integration – Dr Jose Marques-Hueso

Heriot-Watt University

Details:

One of the largest challenges in additive manufacturing and 3D printing is the multicomponent integration with different materials, especially in the case of plastics and metals. The current project will employ different bio-inspired approaches to create new processes for 3D printing.

We are looking for a creative and highly motivated student willing to work in the field of 3D printing technologies. Studies in Chemistry, Physics, or Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Materials, or related), are desired. The student is expected to work effectively as a part of a team, both in the own institution and with the project partners. An outstanding expedient, and organizational and lab skills are required.

The student will be integrated in a national project funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The project consists in the development of novel processes and advanced materials for 3D additive manufacturing techniques in order to achieve new functionalities. The current project will employ different bio-inspired approaches to create new processes for multicomponent integration in 3D printing. These techniques will allow the creation of different products for varied applications and fields. The project is carried out by Heriot-Watt University and the University of Leeds, along with the collaboration of three industrial partners (Blatchford, Renishaw and Merlin Circuit Technology). The PhD will be developed under the supervision of Dr. Jose Marques-Hueso and Prof. Marc Desmulliez at the MISEC group, which is one of the largest groups in UK for microsystems and packaging. The team at Heriot-Watt University will also account with a post-doctoral researcher.

Heriot-Watt is Scotland’s most international university, boasting the largest international student cohort, with five campuses in three countries, and was voted Scottish University of the Year in both 2011 and 2012. The School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University is one of the most successful engineering faculties in the UK. In a strategic partnership with the University of Edinburgh, EPS was ranked first in power ratings in General Engineering by the last Research Excellence Network assessment of UK research quality (REF2014).

Requirements

All applicants must have or expect to have a 1st class MChem, MPhys, MSci, MEng or equivalent degree by Autumn 2017. Selection will be based on academic excellence and research potential, and all short-listed applicants will be interviewed (in person or by Skype).

The James Watt Scholarship consists of an annual stipend of £15,000 (tax free) and full fees payment, for 3 years.

Deadline of applications: Tuesday 31st January 2017. The successful candidate must commence studies by Friday 1st December 2017 at the very latest.
