Details: Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship held jointly with the Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing and the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Surrey. The funding is for a three year research programme leading to the degree of PhD. The aim of the project is to investigate machine learning and image analysis for developing a multi-modal platform for advanced biomedical image measurement and pattern analysis system for improving cancer diagnosis and translational applications. The project will use machine-led analysis to exploit information present in images, and other information, used for the diagnosis and characterisation of particular tumour types using digital pathology data sets available at the University and through Fitzpatrick Referrals, Oncology and Soft Tissue (FROST). This project brings together expertise in imaging, machine learning, molecular science and veterinary pathology across CVSSP, the Surrey Vet School, FROST, vHive and NPL.

Eligibility: A first Class or Upper Second Honours degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in an appropriate discipline (e.g., bioinformatics, computational biology, engineering, computer science, signal processing, applied mathematics, physics). You should be able to demonstrate excellent mathematical, analytical and programming skills. Previous experience in bioinformatics, computer vision, machine/deep learning and/or computational life sciences would be advantageous.

The studentship covers the University tuition fees (at EU/UK level) and provides an annual tax free stipend (rate for 2016-2017 is £14,553 p.a. tax-free) and appropriate bench fees.  NB it will not cover the overseas tuition fees (currently £17.5K or £20K from Oct 2017) for students who are outside of the EU.
